The Story Behind the Song
Unlike many of my songs, Liminality didn't begin with a story.
It started with a simple piano melody that appeared during an improvised session at the keyboard. There was no concept, message or emotional theme attached to it at the time — just a musical idea that immediately felt worth exploring.
As the arrangement gradually took shape, I realized the music was evoking a feeling I couldn't quite put into words. It wasn't sad, hopeful or nostalgic. It felt like being suspended between one chapter of life and the next, where the past no longer fits but the future hasn't fully revealed itself either.
Searching for a way to describe that feeling eventually led me to the word Liminality. A liminal space is a threshold — a period of transition where one part of life has ended but the next hasn't quite begun. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how universal that experience is. We all pass through moments like these, whether they're brought on by loss, change, uncertainty or the anticipation of something new.
One of the most rewarding surprises came after I started sharing early sketches online. Even before there was a title or a story attached to the music, people seemed to connect with it. Looking back, I think the emotion was already there. I just hadn't found the language for it yet.
Unlike many of my other releases, Liminality didn't begin with an idea that became a song. It was the other way around. The music revealed the idea, and the title simply gave it a name.
At its core, Liminality is about the spaces in between. The moments when one chapter has ended but the next hasn't yet begun. They're rarely comfortable, but they often become the places where we grow the most.
