The Story Behind The Song
Everything Is Gone began taking shape shortly after my father-in-law and close friend passed away. While the song isn't about his passing, it brought back memories of other moments in my life when everything I thought I could count on suddenly disappeared.
I was 19 when I lost my mother to cancer. Years later, I went through a divorce. Very different experiences, but both left me with that same overwhelming feeling of having the ground pulled out from under my feet.
There's something almost surreal about those moments. One day, your life has a familiar shape. You have routines, plans, people and things you take for granted. Then something happens, and suddenly the future you imagined no longer exists.
And sometimes, deep down, you know what's coming. You see the warning signs, you sense that something isn't right, but you keep the blinkers on. Perhaps because acknowledging what's happening would mean accepting something you're not ready to face. Looking back, I can recognize that in my own life, particularly when my relationship was falling apart.
And yet, when it finally happens, you're never quite prepared.
The world keeps turning.
People go to work. Traffic lights change. Someone laughs at a joke. Life carries on around you, seemingly oblivious to the fact that your entire world has just fallen apart.
Somehow, you're expected to carry on too.
That feeling became the starting point for Everything Is Gone. It's not really a song about death, divorce or any particular kind of loss. It's about what happens when something that gave your life meaning is suddenly taken away, and you're left trying to figure out who you are and where to go from there.
Musically, though, I didn't want the song to be quite as bleak as the lyrics. Instead, it took on a melancholic, cinematic character, drawing on the bittersweet sounds of the '80s and artists like Jan Hammer, blended with progressive trance and elements of synthwave. There's sadness in the melodies, but also a sense of movement and something almost uplifting beneath it all.
The contrast felt right to me. Because even in the darkest moments, life isn't entirely without beauty. And however impossible it might seem at the time, there's usually a way forward. Not necessarily back to the life you had, but toward something new.
You pick up what pieces you can. You learn to live with what's missing. And eventually, perhaps without even noticing when it happened, you begin to feel alive again.
At its core, Everything Is Gone is about the moments when life as we know it comes crashing down, and the struggle to find our way forward. Because sometimes, when everything is gone, the only thing left to do is begin again.
Lyrics
Everything Is Gone
Sometimes your world Takes an unexpected turn From one day to the next You crumble in the dirt Didn't see it coming I guess I was naive And now there's nothing left But ruins and debris Try to pick up the pieces I try to be strong Try to save what's left of me But everything My everything My everything Is gone Nothing left to care for Nothing left to feel No sense of direction Alone behind the wheel Didn't see it coming I guess I was naive Couldn't comprehend that This was happening to me Try to pick up the pieces I try to be strong Try to save what's left of me But everything My everything My everything Is gone Try to pick up the pieces I try to be strong Try to save what's left of me But everything is gone Try to pick up the pieces I try to be strong Try to save what's left of me But everything My everything But everything My everything Is gone
