The Story Behind The Song

Reality Pills began with a feeling I suspect most people know: that strange moment when a long summer ends and real life suddenly starts again.

There's something wonderfully deceptive about summer. Routines disappear, evenings stretch into nights, and for a while it becomes surprisingly easy to forget about deadlines, responsibilities and everything waiting for you back in the real world. You know it can't last, but part of you starts pretending that maybe it can.

Then September arrives.

The alarm goes off. The morning commute returns. Your inbox is full. The days get shorter. All those things you successfully ignored for a few weeks are still exactly where you left them.

Reality comes knocking.

That feeling became the starting point for Reality Pills. I wanted the track to capture the contrast between escape and return — the dreamy world we create for ourselves and the uncomfortable moment when we're forced to step out of it.

Musically, that contrast pushed the song into a place somewhere between progressive trance and synthwave. There's a nostalgic, almost cinematic quality to the synths, but underneath it is the forward motion of trance. To me, it sounds a little like driving home through the city after something you didn't want to end.

And perhaps that's why the idea goes beyond summer. We all find ways of escaping reality occasionally. A vacation. A relationship. A night out. Music. A dream of a different life. Sometimes we need those escapes.

The problem isn't leaving reality for a while.

It's having to come back.

At its core, Reality Pills is about that moment when the beautiful escape ends and ordinary life comes rushing back in. Escaping reality is easy. Coming back is the hard part.
