The Story Behind the Song

Some songs arrive fully formed. Others patiently wait until you're ready for them.

Hope Never Dies belongs firmly in the second category.

The first sketch dates all the way back to the autumn of 2021, making it one of the very first ideas I recorded after setting up my new studio. I knew there was something special about it, but every attempt to develop the sixteen-bar loop reached a dead end. Eventually, I accepted that the song simply wasn't ready yet and moved on.

Almost two years later, I opened the project again.

This time, the direction revealed itself almost immediately. Instead of forcing it into the trance sound I had been exploring, I leaned into a slower blend of synthwave and downtempo trance. Suddenly everything clicked, and the arrangement seemed to grow naturally from the original sketch that had been waiting all along.

Like several earlier instrumentals, the finished song pulled me back toward an idealized version of Miami. Not the real city, but the place it represented in my imagination as a teenager — a world of neon reflections, palm trees, excitement, and the comforting illusion that somewhere out there, I might become a more interesting version of myself.

One moment surrounding the release has stayed with me ever since. I wrote a post about how Miami and American culture had a huge influence on me as a kid growing up in Sweden during the 1980s. A producer friend from Miami replied simply, "Miami loves you back."

It's a simple comment, but it meant more than he probably realized. For a brief moment, it felt like a shared understanding of how music, places, and memories can become a form of escape — and a connection between people living on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

Looking back, I think the emotional journey of the song mirrors its title. It moves between hope and melancholy without ever fully settling in either place. Every time the music drifts into uncertainty, it gradually finds its way back toward the light again.

At its core, Hope Never Dies is about refusing to let other people define who you can become. Sometimes hope means chasing a dream. Sometimes it means believing that the best version of yourself is still out there, waiting to be discovered. And sometimes it means letting a song wait until you're finally able to do it justice and tell its story.
