The Story Behind the Song

After several releases where writing lyrics had become an uphill battle, If I Had Stayed Here finally broke the spell.

The music came first, as it often did. I had been experimenting with melodies and arrangements when I realized the track needed a vocal to come alive. To get moving quickly, I browsed Splice and found a short vocal phrase that immediately felt right.

There was just one problem.

It wasn't my story. It wasn't my world.

I'd already experimented with building a song around a complete Splice vocal, but by now I knew I wanted the stories to be my own. And to my relief, the words finally started flowing again.

The original vocal only inspired the song's repeating phrase structure. From there, I wrote a completely new melody, lyric, and story. Once the chorus and the central idea had fallen into place, the rest of the song seemed to write itself. After months of struggling to find lyrics that felt genuine, it was a reminder that sometimes all creativity needs is the right spark.

Musically, I revisited an idea I'd been exploring for a while: combining a driving trance arpeggio with an acoustic guitar melody. It felt like a natural continuation of Millennium, but more refined and emotionally focused. Even today, it's one of my favorite instrumental arrangements from that period.

The finished lyric became a reflection on a question many people eventually ask themselves: What did it cost me to become the person I am today? On the surface, it's about returning to your hometown and wondering what life might have looked like if you'd made different choices — or never left at all. Beneath that, it's about the one you left behind: the person who might have become your future if your ambitions had taken you somewhere else. It's not really about regret. It's about accepting that every dream has a price — and wondering, if only for a moment, whether you'd pay it again.

The song has always held a special place for Elin, who still considers it one of her favorite Fredlite recordings. I think part of the reason is that everything simply came together at the right moment: the melody, the arrangement, the lyrics, and the vocal all seemed to arrive at once.

To me, If I Had Stayed Here is about rediscovering my own voice. Sometimes the hardest part of creating isn't finding inspiration — it's trusting yourself enough to know that your own story is worth telling.

Lyrics

If I Had Stayed Here

Driving by
The place where we grew up
Our old playground
Where we first made out
Standing by
The tree down by the beach
Where we carved our names
And I'm wondering

What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
With you

What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
With you

If I had stayed here

All those parties
Down at Eric's house
Endless summer nights
Living here and now
Looking back on
Everything we had
All that passion
And I can't help myself

What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
With you

If I had stayed here

What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
What would be if I had stayed here
