The Story Behind the Song

At some point, I suddenly decided that Fredlite needed a Christmas song.

I found myself drawn to one of Sweden's most beloved Christmas melodies: Gläns Över Sjö Och Strand. Rooted in the work of two of the country's most renowned writers and composers, it already possessed the kind of emotional depth and melodic sophistication I had been searching for. It also felt surprisingly natural to reinterpret within the trance sound I had been developing.

By then, I had finally begun finding a production style that truly felt like my own. Looking back, this was probably the first release that sounded unmistakably like the Fredlite trance sound I had been chasing ever since restarting the project.

Despite my best intentions, I didn't manage to finish the production before Christmas. Rather than shelving it for another year, I decided to release it anyway. In Sweden, the Christmas season has a habit of lingering well into January, so releasing it just after New Year's still felt surprisingly natural.

I struggled for a long time with what to call the song. A direct English translation never felt quite right. While searching for inspiration, I stumbled across an old Nordic description of the Aurora Borealis: the shimmering reflections from the shields of the Valkyries as they returned to Valhalla. That image immediately resonated with me. It preserved the sense of wonder I wanted from the original title while adding a subtle connection to Scandinavian mythology. From that moment, the visual identity almost designed itself, with snowy landscapes illuminated by the Northern Lights.

The response exceeded my expectations. What had begun as an experiment became one of my more successful early releases, eventually accumulating more than 55,000 streams — surpassing several songs I had expected to perform much better.

What surprises me most, though, is how well it has held up. A trance interpretation of a traditional Christmas melody could easily have become a novelty that felt awkward a few years later, but somehow it never did. Outside Scandinavia, many listeners probably don't even recognize it as a Christmas song. Instead, it simply works as an atmospheric instrumental with a distinctly Nordic feel — and I'm perfectly happy with that.

At its core, Valkyrian Shine is about taking something deeply rooted in tradition and seeing it through new eyes. Sometimes honoring the past isn't about preserving it exactly as it was — it's about finding a way for it to speak to the present.
