The Story Behind the Song

Some songs come together effortlessly. This one fought me almost every step of the way.

Like so many of my productions, it began with a simple piano melody. I loved it immediately. The problem was that it naturally led into one of the cheesiest chord progressions I'd ever written. After finally managing to make Hope Never Dies work despite similar doubts, I decided this idea deserved the same chance.

The struggle continued throughout the production. The arrangement seemed determined to pull itself in conflicting directions, the key changes felt almost impossible to resolve naturally, and I never quite found a sound palette that completely satisfied me. In the end, I stopped trying to make everything perfect and simply finished the song.

Around the same time, summer was giving way to autumn. I found myself at a crossroads, both professionally and creatively. Consulting work had become uncertain, and I was beginning to question where both my career and the Fredlite project were heading. Like many Swedes, I've always associated autumn with a sense of renewed purpose — as if the cooler air and familiar routines somehow promise that life will settle into place again.

That feeling shaped the song more than I realized at the time.

It also influenced the visual identity. I had grown tired of yet another sunset over another beautiful landscape. Instead, I picked up my camera and photographed one of Stockholm's most striking subway stations. With its deep red rock walls and long escalator leading toward the daylight above, it felt less like public transport and more like an underground cathedral. To me, it became a symbol of searching for clarity and eventually finding your way back into the light.

Looking back, I can hear both the strengths and the compromises. There are moments I still genuinely love — the piano melody, the harmonic movement, and the ambitious modulations. Other parts never quite became what I had hoped for. My attempts to blend in elements from the influences I was exploring at the time never felt completely convincing.

At its core, New Beginnings is about believing that a new chapter is waiting just around the corner. Looking back, there's a certain irony in that. While the music celebrated new beginnings, I wasn't at all convinced that the Fredlite project would ever become what I dreamed it could be. Perhaps that's exactly why I needed to write it. Sometimes music isn't a reflection of where you are — it's a reminder of where you still hope to go.
