The Story Behind the Song
Racing Heart marked the beginning of one of the most important creative partnerships in the Fredlite project.
The inspiration came from an unexpected place. After graduating from high school, my oldest daughter's group of friends gradually began scattering across Sweden and beyond to study, work, and follow their own dreams. Listening from the sidelines as they talked about friendships changing, relationships being tested, and the uncertainty of growing apart sparked an idea. Together with a few films exploring similar themes, those conversations eventually became the foundation for the lyrics.
Musically, the song also represented another step forward. Around that time I had been studying music theory more seriously, eager to understand why certain chord progressions and melodies felt so emotionally satisfying. Rather than making the music sound academic, those lessons had the opposite effect. They unlocked new creative possibilities, allowing me to write more naturally while adding subtle harmonic twists that still make this one of my favorite compositions.
The biggest challenge, however, wasn't the music.
Up until then, I had mostly worked remotely with vocalists. While that had worked well, I realized I wanted something different this time. I wanted to be in the studio together with the singer, shaping each phrase, experimenting with different interpretations, and capturing the emotion in real time.
The only problem was that I didn't really know any vocalists.
Or so I thought.
Elin had previously worked with my wife, and we'd already heard her sing at our wedding a few years earlier. During one of my wife's dinner gatherings, the conversation somehow turned to music, and before long Elin expressed an interest in recording the song.
Looking back, it's funny how casually it all began.
Neither of us could have known that this would become the first of many collaborations. Over the years, Elin's voice has become an essential part of the Fredlite sound, bringing warmth, vulnerability, and personality to songs that simply wouldn't be the same without her.
The recording sessions themselves also taught me something valuable. No matter how carefully I prepared my own demo vocals beforehand, there always came a moment where Elin stopped following them and made the song her own. More often than not, those unexpected interpretations turned out to be better than what I had originally imagined. It became an early lesson in the value of trusting another artist's instincts.
The release also brought some encouraging milestones, including my first airplay on internet radio stations. Looking back, those early spins felt like another small confirmation that the project was gradually finding its audience.
At its core, Racing Heart is about the courage to keep moving forward, even when it means leaving people, places, or versions of yourself behind. Fittingly, it also marked the beginning of a creative partnership that would help shape the future of Fredlite for years to come.
Lyrics
Racing Heart
I got the offer And it's time to choose Stay in the comfort zone Or risk losing you Together forever It's always been us But this is my passion I can't give it up This is my future This is my life I can’t go back now Can’t change my mind It’s coming together And falling apart I need you here now But it's just me And my racing heart I need to do this Or I'll never know Where this will take me How far I can go Now I’m departing Aiming for the sky I fasten my seatbelt With tears in my eyes This is my future This is my life I can’t go back now Can’t change my mind It’s coming together And falling apart I need you here now But it's just me And my racing heart
