The Story Behind the Song

A Light In The Night began with one of the darkest piano riffs I'd written up to that point.

It had an eerie, almost cinematic quality that immediately reminded me of the crime dramas my wife loves to watch. I even joked to myself that I should forget about turning it into a Fredlite track and simply upload it to a sync library for television instead.

For a while, I couldn't figure out where the music wanted to go. The problem, as usual, was getting beyond the initial loop. But eventually the missing pieces fell into place, and almost without noticing it, the song gradually moved away from its darker beginnings. Looking back, I suspect that's exactly where the title came from.

The earliest versions leaned heavily on the hypnotic drive of Underworld's Dark & Long (Dark Train) — a track I have always loved, not least because of its unforgettable use in Trainspotting. As the production evolved, however, those similarities gradually disappeared. New chord progressions, powerful synth stabs, and a breakbeat section inspired by my love of late-'90s Drum & Bass and Jungle transformed it into something entirely its own.

One unexpected highlight came not long after the release. A message arrived from someone who had discovered the track on TikTok. It turned out he was the arena DJ for the Berliner Eisbären hockey team, and he asked if he could create a reworked version for the team's playoff run. Before long, the song was echoing through the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin during the championship finals. That's one of those surreal moments you never imagine when you're sitting alone in your studio.

Commercially, the song never became one of my biggest releases. But it's quietly built a loyal following over the years. Even today, I still hear from listeners who tell me it's their favorite Fredlite instrumental, which means more than any streaming number ever could.

At its core, A Light In The Night is about the idea that hope often finds its way in through the cracks rather than despite them. Looking back, the arrangement is eclectic and occasionally unruly, but perhaps that's exactly why it works. The different influences don't always fit together neatly, yet together they create something that feels strangely complete.
