The Story Behind the Song

Who I Really Am is one of the most personal songs in the Fredlite catalog.

The initial spark came from hearing I Can't Feel My Face and The Hills by The Weeknd. Not because Who I Really Am tells the same story, but because those songs explore two contrasting sides of the same idea. One embraces the euphoric feeling of becoming someone else, while the other suggests that the version of ourselves we reveal under the influence might actually be our truest one. That tension stayed with me, but the lyrics that followed became deeply personal.

Growing up, I was painfully shy and socially awkward. Making friends rarely came naturally, and approaching someone I was attracted to often felt impossible. For a long time, I believed that confidence was simply something other people were born with.

Then alcohol entered the picture.

For the first time, I found myself becoming the person I had always wanted to be. Conversations flowed effortlessly. Making friends suddenly felt natural. The insecurities that normally held me back seemed to disappear, and for a few hours I could experience life without constantly questioning myself. At the same time, those nights often came with a price, making me question whether the confident version of myself was real, or simply borrowed.

That tension became the emotional heart of the song. At its core, Who I Really Am is not about alcohol — it is about identity. It asks an uncomfortable question: if you only feel like your authentic self when something lowers your inhibitions, which version is actually the real you?

Musically, the song marked two important milestones. Up until then, I had primarily recorded my own vocals as demos before handing songs over to guest vocalists. Around that time, AI vocal technology had also become good enough to create convincing demo performances. But for this song, neither option felt right. Because the lyrics were so personal, I decided to record and release the vocals myself. It felt like the only honest way to tell this particular story.

The song also marked an important milestone in the evolution of the Fredlite sound. Earlier releases had gradually moved in this direction, but Who I Really Am was the point where the project's defining blend of emotional songwriting, melodic trance, and modern electronic production became fully recognizable. It would become one of the project's defining songs, resonating strongly with listeners from the very beginning. Early studio clips gained significant traction on social media, including Fredlite's first viral TikTok video, and the song has since become one of the project's most-streamed releases.

At its heart, Who I Really Am is about searching for authenticity. It is about the gap between the person we believe ourselves to be and the person we become when fear, anxiety, and self-consciousness finally let go. Whether that version is our truest self — or simply another illusion — is a question the song deliberately leaves unanswered.

Lyrics

Who I Really Am

Don't know if I
Can handle this
Without you by my side
I only am
Who I really am
When I'm hanging out with you

You got my back
You pick me up
You make me shine like the morning sky
The flow we have
Could make a river cry
I've never felt this much alive

A shady haze
Anxiety
I really got out of control
I hate to be
Bound to you
But I'm nothing on my own

You got my back
You pick me up
You make me shine like the morning sky
The flow we have
Could make a river cry
I've never felt this much alive

I've never felt this much alive

You got my back
You pick me up
You make me shine like the morning sky
The flow we have
Could make a river cry
I've never felt this much alive
