The Story Behind the Song
Angel of Decadence quickly became one of the defining songs in the Fredlite catalog.
From the moment I began sharing early demos, the response was unlike anything I'd experienced before. By the time of its release, it was clear the song had connected with listeners in a special way. Years later, it remains one of the project's biggest releases, accumulating well over 300,000 streams across its different versions.
The story draws inspiration from a period in my early twenties when weekends seemed to revolve around parties, late nights, and the feeling that life was happening faster than you could keep up. There was excitement, freedom, terrible decisions, unforgettable memories — and occasionally the morning after.
One lyric in particular always makes me smile:
"Waking up...
Alone again...
Kneeling before the god of porcelain..."
That image was partly inspired by my fascination with Charles Bukowski's writing, where mornings often began with exactly that kind of brutal honesty.
What kept the song from becoming just another party anthem, though, was changing the perspective.
Rather than telling the story through another reckless male protagonist, I imagined the song through the eyes of a woman. That immediately made the narrative more interesting to me. The contrast between elegance and self-destruction, glamour and vulnerability, gave the song a tension it wouldn't otherwise have had.
The visual identity continued exploring the darker direction that had begun with Chasing Illusions and My Goodbye. A single high heel abandoned on a rain-soaked street became the cover image, while the promotional videos contrasted sophisticated nightlife with the emotional cost hidden beneath it. The champagne, the beautiful clothes, and the dazzling city lights all remained — but so did the consequences waiting for morning.
Musically, the song continued refining the Fredlite sound while pushing the energy even further. Elin's performance captured exactly the confidence, temptation, and quiet recklessness the lyric demanded, turning what could have been a simple club track into something far more theatrical.
At its core, Angel of Decadence isn't really about partying. It's about that part of human nature that keeps returning to the things we promised ourselves we'd leave behind. We know better. We swear "never again." And then, sooner or later...
"Here I am."
