The Story Behind the Song

Chasing Illusions marked the beginning of a new chapter for Fredlite.

On the surface, it's a song about giving in to desire while knowing exactly how it will end. The lyrics explore that strange human tendency to keep chasing something we know will eventually hurt us. Not because we're naïve, but because, for a while, the illusion feels better than reality.

That emotional contradiction became the heart of the song.

Musically, I wanted to move further into a progressive trance sound while raising the overall production quality. Looking back, this was the first Fredlite release where I felt I'd achieved the kind of mix and master I'd been chasing from the beginning. The low end finally had the depth and warmth I was after, the mix felt open and detailed, and everything came together with a confidence I'd struggled to reach on earlier releases.

The visual identity evolved just as dramatically.

Until then, much of the Fredlite universe had revolved around sunsets, coastlines, and open landscapes. Chasing Illusions stepped into an entirely different world. The artwork replaced distant horizons with a close-up portrait framed by rain-soaked glass, blurred reflections from passing cars and city lights, and a colder, more intimate palette.

The promotional videos explored the same emotional territory. They followed a woman making her way through the city at night after receiving a late-night call. There was no real sense of romance or mutuality — only the quiet understanding that she had been granted an audience rather than invited into a relationship. She knew she was being used, yet went anyway.

Looking back, I realize something else was beginning to emerge.

I wasn't trying to build a mythology or a made-up world. I was simply following the stories and images that felt most compelling. Only later did I realize they all belonged to the same place.

The response confirmed that I was moving in the right direction. The song became one of the strongest releases of that period, and Elin's vocal captured exactly the mixture of vulnerability, desire, and self-deception I had imagined while writing it.

At its core, Chasing Illusions is about self-deception. Not the kind where we fail to see the truth, but the kind where we see it perfectly clearly and convince ourselves it doesn't matter. Sometimes the most dangerous illusions are the ones we choose to believe.

Lyrics

Chasing Illusions

Deep inside I know you play me
A million lies in a hot disguise
You are nothing but a heartache
But I refuse to realize
That I'm

Chasing illusions
Livin’ a dream
I know I shouldn't but it
Feels so heavenly
Give me your lovin’
Give it to me
Until reality comes
Crashing down on me
Comes crashing down on me

I can't face the afterwards
Being alone without you next to me
All the things you do to me
Make me feel like I can't breathe
And I need you here again
I need you again

I need you again
I need you again
I need you again

Chasing illusions
Livin’ a dream
I know I shouldn't but it
Feels so heavenly
Give me your lovin’
Give it to me
Until reality comes
Crashing down on me
Comes crashing down on me
