The Story Behind the Song

Looking back, Hysteria stands apart from almost everything else in the Fredlite catalog. Following the unexpected traction of Who I Really Am, I found myself reconnecting with another side of my musical upbringing — one rooted in futurepop, electronic body music, and darker synth-driven electronic music long before Fredlite found its melodic trance identity.

Rather than approaching Def Leppard's classic from a trance perspective, I leaned heavily into futurepop and electronic body music influences. The result was a darker, synth-driven interpretation that arguably had more in common with artists like VNV Nation and Colony 5 than the melodic trance and trance-pop sound Fredlite would later become known for.

In many ways, the release represents a period of experimentation and exploration. While it may feel like an outlier today, it also serves as a snapshot of a time when I was still discovering exactly what the Fredlite project should be.

The track even earned a somewhat unusual distinction when it appeared in a Beatport playlist titled Worst Trance Releases. Given that it was never really intended to be a trance track in the first place, perhaps the genre confusion was understandable.

Years later, Hysteria continues to attract listeners and remains one of the more unexpected chapters in the Fredlite story — a reminder that creative detours can sometimes find an audience of their own.
