The Story Behind The Song

Never Meant To Be began with an idea that fascinated me: the moment when a breakup stops feeling like a tragedy and starts feeling like a revelation.

So many songs end with heartbreak. I wanted to explore what comes after it. The point where you finally stop asking why something ended and begin realizing it may never have been right in the first place. It's a difficult shift because it forces you to let go not only of another person, but also of the future you imagined together.

That realization became the emotional foundation of the song. It's less about losing someone than it is about seeing the relationship clearly for the first time. Sometimes the hardest truth to accept is that love and passion alone aren't enough. Two people can care deeply for each other while still bring out the worst in one another.

The writing process took an unexpected turn. Early on, the song split into two very different directions. One focused on the vocal and emotional storytelling, while the other evolved into a longer, club-oriented trance arrangement. After sharing both versions with Elin Kling, we decided to follow the vocal-driven path.

Interestingly, the alternate arrangement refused to disappear. Many of the musical ideas developed during those sessions eventually found a new home in One Last Night. Looking back, I'm glad I didn't force them to compete with each other. Each song became stronger by being allowed to become its own thing.

One of the things I appreciate most about Elin's performance is that it never overstates the emotion. There's sadness in the vocal, but there's also quiet strength. By the final chorus, the feeling isn't one of defeat anymore. It's relief.

At its core, Never Meant To Be is about what happens when you stop lying to yourself. Sometimes moving on isn't about giving up on love — it's about finally making room for the kind of love that was always meant for you.

Lyrics

Never Meant To Be

Couldn't stand who I became
When I was with you
More in love with love itself
Than I ever knew

I wasn’t good for you
And you weren’t good for me
We kept on pretending
But we knew it wasn't real

We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be

I’m getting over you
I’m getting back to me
Never knew that breaking up
Would make me feel this free

I wasn’t good for you
And you weren’t good for me
We kept on pretending
But we knew it wasn't real

We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be

I need something real
No more self-deceit
Gotta rediscover me
I need to feel it honestly

I need to feel it honestly
Honestly
We knew it wasn’t real

We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
We were never meant to be
